Playing With Gods – Five Years With Wagner’s Ring

Richard Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung is an epic masterpiece of four operas. Anna Kelo, the principal directing assistant of the Finnish National Opera, is unexpectedly presented with the task of adapting and directing the tetralogy. She sets off on the long journey fearlessly, trusting her own vision. The documentary follows the planning and production of the operas for five years, from the very first planning meetings in January 2017, through Reininkulta, to the production of Valkyrie, colliding with Covid-19, to the dress rehearsal in January 2021. Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen is replaced by Susanna Mälkki, but will one of them ultimately get to complete the Ring?
