The Voice Of The Birds – Olivier Messiaen, Composer And Ornithologist
For Olivier Messiaen, birds were “the greatest musicians inhabiting our planet”. Their endless melodies with the finest tonal gradations, their diverse singing and the infinite variety of rhythms were Messiaen’s lifeblood. For him birds were something metaphysical, a direct link to God. The film portrays the life of the composer and ornithologist Messiaen through musical examples and narratives of selected interlocutors: conductor Kent Nagano, cellist Camille Thomas, Ondes Martenot player Nathalie Forget, organist Thomas Lacôte, Messiaen biographer Peter Hill, DJ and biologist Dominik Eulberg and pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who explains Messiaen’s “Catalogue d'oiseaux” (Catalogue of Birds – concert separately available).
